Hundreds of potential future Lightning stars gathered at Sunshine Coast Netball Association last Friday for the third annual Unitywater Lightning Cup.
The school-aged competition welcomed primary students in years five and six from the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Moreton Bay regions to participate in an all-day round robin tournament.
The competitive carnival included three divisions: Championship, Development and Boys, as well as a multi-class ‘come-and-try’ opportunity for students with different physical, cognitive or intellectual abilities.
Lightning’s Strike Zone featured food trucks, music, merchandise, a silent disco, free hair braiding and temporary tattoos, giveaways and inflatable games.
The competition continued off the court, with many students getting involved in Unitywater’s relay race. The winning time was hotly contested throughout the day.
The relay race crowned two winning teams — the ‘Spinning Spinners’ from Pacific Paradise State School in the boys division, and the ‘Spirits’ from St Eugene’s College in the girls division.
Lightning players attended throughout the day, running the multi-class sessions and providing students the opportunity to meet their idols.
Unitywater Executive Manager Strategic Engagement, Joshua Zugajev said: “Our congratulations to St Andrew’s Anglican College, Good Samaritan Catholic College and Buderim Mountain State School. It was a pleasure to have supported the Unitywater Lightning Cup again this year and encourage our young people to stay hydrated with our fantastic local tap water and to reduce single use plastics.”
