Lightning’s 2021 Captain Karla Pretorius is widely considered one of the world’s best players at Goal Defence and regularly leads the league for intercepts. The consistency in Pretorius’ game week in, week out is second to none, shutting down the opposition’s most damaging players in attack while also being a playmaker for her Lightning teammates.
2022 will see Pretorius remain on the sidelines, as she takes a year’s hiatus as she is currently expecting her first child.
Pretorius has been named the elusive Lightning Player of the Year in three consecutive years between 2018 – 2020 – showing her dominance across multiple seasons at the Club. Pretorius is also Vice-Captain for the South African Proteas team and was awarded Player of the Tournament in the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup. Before Lightning, the 31-year-old spent time in the Vitality English Super League for Team Bath.
