Maweni, Proscovia To Depart Lightning

Sunshine Coast Lightning can today confirm that Goal Shooter Peace Proscovia and Goal Keeper Phumza Maweni will depart the Club later this month.

The pair have been integral members of the Lightning squad since signing on to the Suncorp Super Netball team ahead of the 2019 season.

Maweni played all 47 games between Season 2019 to 2021 and formed a formidable combination with fellow South African representative Karla Pretorius.

The 37-year-old finished the 2021 season with an impressive 23 intercepts and 54 gains, after taking more creative licence in matches this year, in addition to an impenetrable defence.

Proscovia, the current Ugandan captain, has been a tall target in the Lightning shooting circle in recent seasons, working in combination with Cara Koenen and Steph Wood.

Proscovia shot 670 goals in 42 games with the Club, including a career best 53 goals against West Coast Fever in Round 2, 2019.

Head Coach Kylee Byrne thanked Proscovia and Maweni for their dedication and service to Lightning and for the contributions both as a player and person.

“Peace has grown so much as a player since joining our Club and it’s been a pleasure to watch her develop and really become that strong target in our attack line,” Byrne said.

“Anyone who has met Peace knows the profound impact she has on those around her and that was certainly felt in her time at Lightning.

“Phumi has absolutely come out of her shell and grown in confidence since joining the Club and as a Coach that is so rewarding to see.

“Her combination with Karla continued to build year on year and we can’t wait to watch that connection continue to develop in the upcoming international series next month.

“We appreciate everything Peace and Phumi have sacrificed to relocate to the Sunshine Coast and become part of the Lightning family over the past three seasons – especially given the added impacts of living abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a Club, we wish them both the absolute best as they explore new and exciting opportunities.”

It has been confirmed Maweni will compete with the South African side in an international series in October against Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Both Proscovia and Maweni previously competed in the UK Vitality Netball Superleague before joining Lightning in the Suncorp Super Netball competition ahead of the 2019 season.
