Sunshine Coast Lightning has officially unveiled its first ever large-scale community mural in front of Members, fans, partners and special guests.
Painted by local mural artist, Sarah Sculley and First Nations artist, Zartisha Davis, the mural features Lightning’s logo, players past and present, the Club’s two premiership wins, and incorporates Lightning’s 2024 First Nations dress design elements.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Rosanna Natoli attended the community event, which saw a number of young netballers at Caloundra Indoor Stadium to witness the official unveiling and meet the Sunshine Coast Lightning players.
Storm Group CEO Justin Rodski, who was also in attendance, said the mural was an exciting addition to the community.
“As a Club so deeply embedded in the community, it’s exciting to see our players and significant moments in the Club’s history on such a large scale for the whole community to enjoy,” he said.
“The mural looks absolutely fantastic, and I’d like to congratulate Sarah Sculley and Zartisha Davis on all their hard work in bringing this vision to life.
“I’d also like to thank Sunshine Coast Council for their support of this project, and hope that it brings joy to all the young netballers who play and train at these courts.”
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Rosanna Natoli said that as a foundation partner, Council had been supporting the Sunshine Coast Lightning since 2016.
“Council is proud to see our national netball team acknowledged through public art at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium,” Mayor Natoli said.
“The artwork created by Sculley Design and Kabi Kabi artist Zartisha Davis is a great example of collaboration and teamwork.
“I am thrilled to be here to see this vibrant artwork unveiled.
“The artwork celebrates the dynamic spirit of our community and fosters community pride through the combination of sport and art, while respectfully acknowledging the traditional owners of Sunshine Coast lands.
“The Caloundra Indoor Stadium has always been a very popular sporting venue and I am sure those who visit this space for training and competition will enjoy this colourful representation of elite sportswomen and professional sport on the Sunshine Coast.”
Sunshine Coast Lightning will play the Melbourne Vixens in Melbourne this weekend, before returning home for First Nations Round at UniSC Arena on Kabi Kabi Country. Limited tickets are still available.
