ROUND 14 PREVIEW: LIGHTNING V THUNDERBIRDS

In the final game of the regular season, Sunshine Coast Lightning will take on the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

Both teams are fighting for the win, with Lightning desperate to snag that fourth spot on the ladder ahead of the Melbourne Mavericks, and Thunderbirds wanting to retain top spot on the ladder which gives them a home semi-final.

While currently on equal points with the Mavericks, if Lightning win this game they secure fourth position – so their finals campaign is well and truly in their hands.

KEY MATCH UP

Liz Watson vs Latanya Wilson

Watson is a consistent performer in the Lightning line-up, currently leading the league in centre pass receives and goal assists. She’s a leader on and off the court, and has played the most number of minutes across the season of any player in the league.

Wilson has had a stand-out season in 2024 and her stats confirm it. She currently sits second in both intercepts and deflections behind her teammate Shamera Stirling-Humphrey, an impressive achievement for a wing defence.

COACH'S COMMENT

Belinda Reynolds said the team is prepared to fight for their spot in finals.

“We’ve been battling every week to stay in the top four and this week is no different,” she said.

“Adelaide’s been in great form and they’ve been a really consistent team this season, but I absolutely think we’re coming into great form, and we’ve won five of the last eight matches.

“We’re peaking at the right time and we’ll do our homework on Adelaide and attack the contest from the get-go.”
