Fierce rivals on court and allies off it, the Sunshine Coast Lightning and West Coast Fever will celebrate Pride Match ‘AS ONE’ when they meet in Suncorp Super Netball’s Round 9 clash at USC Stadium on Saturday.
While both clubs will boldly contest the four competition points, they stand united in their desire to promote netball as a place where everyone belongs and a sport that opens its arms to all, irrespective of gender or sexuality.
Lightning chief executive Danielle Smith said creating the Pride Match as an official event was an important partnership between the clubs.
“Netball is for everyone, and here at Lightning we are passionate about driving diversity, equity and inclusion”, she said.
“Our intention is to build upon last season’s successful inaugural pride match between the Firebirds and Magpies and demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that the LGBTQIA+ community feels welcome and supported.”
“We thank the West Coast Fever for their full support and collaboration on this initiative, where together we celebrate acceptance and inclusivity.”
‘AS ONE’ is part of the Lightning’s club Purpose Statement and reflects togetherness, community, unity and inclusion.
As part of the Pride Match celebrations, both teams will wear pride bibs as well as having the option to wear rainbow shoelaces to embody the spirit that everybody belongs in netball. Coaches, bench officials and commentators will also show their support by wearing rainbow badges.
Court decals and rainbow themed match day activities will add to the atmosphere and fans are encouraged to follow each of the clubs’ social accounts to participate in discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Pride Match starts at 5pm AEST on Saturday 14th May at USC Stadium. Tickets available to purchase at Ticketek.com.au
