Suncorp Super Netball has today announced that Sunday’s Round 6 clash at USC Stadium will now form part of a double header, with Sunshine Coast Lightning to play their scheduled match against Queensland Firebirds at 3pm, followed by the relocated match which will see last season’s premiers, the Melbourne Vixens take on the Adelaide Thunderbirds at 5:45pm.
The changes have been made due to the uncertainty around the COVID-19 cluster currently in Melbourne, with both Victorian teams’ home matches moved from John Cain Arena, with the Collingwood Magpies also required to relocate their match against the West Coast Fever to Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.
Sunshine Coast Lightning CEO Danielle Smith empathised with all travelling teams for their personal sacrifices to accommodate the changes, and thanked them for their ongoing flexibility and professionalism.
“As a Club, we greatly appreciate the immense sacrifices made by each of these athletes, coaches and club officials in what is a complex and challenging environment,” Smith said.
“We also feel for the Vixens and Collingwood Members and fans currently in lockdown who were looking forward to seeing their team play live at the weekend.
“Last year the Sunshine Coast community welcomed SSN clubs with open arms as part of the Queensland hub and we encourage everyone to show up in full voice on Sunday to support the Vixens and Thunderbirds after our Queensland Derby match against the Firebirds.
“We will continue to assist Netball Australia as the situation evolves and extend a helping hand to our fellow teams, umpires and officials who are making sacrifices for our season to continue.”
Round 6 marks the second week of Indigenous Round across the SSN, with a range of activations, performances and acknowledgements occurring throughout match day.
All Lightning reserved seat members and current ticketholders will gain access to watch both games at USC Stadium on Sunday.
