Wood welcomes 50-game milestone
Sunshine Coast Lightning and Samsung Diamonds player Stephanie Wood will celebrate her 50th national league game this Sunday when she takes on Adelaide Thunderbirds in Round 12 of Suncorp Super Netball.
The premiership-winning goal attack said while her performance this weekend would be business as usual, the milestone held special meaning.
“While in some respects, it’s just a number, reaching 50 games is also pretty exciting considering there were times when I didn’t think I’d ever land a contract playing at an elite level,” Wood said.
“It took years before I was offered a contract with NSW Swifts and I’m so grateful to have received that break when I did.”
Wood said she’d first known she’d wanted to pursue a career in netball at age 10.
“I’d been playing for around four years at that point and had no doubt getting out on the court was something I wanted to do at a professional level.
“Some of the biggest highlights of my career to date have been representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games and winning the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball grand final last year.
“I’d love to consolidate my spot in the Diamonds over the coming years and of course, will be working hard to try and secure back-to-back premierships in the Suncorp Super Netball league this August.”
Wood said she relished the opportunity to be based on the Sunshine Coast.
“You can’t go past the relaxed vibe of the coast and it’s so nice having some of Australia’s best beaches on your doorstep,” she said.
“It was a tough decision to wave goodbye to NSW Swifts back in 2016, but I have no doubt that moving to Sunshine Coast Lightning was the right choice.
“My family is based in Queensland and I recognised the value of training under Noeline Taurua so the move made perfect sense.
“I’m incredibly lucky to have developed great friendships with all of my teammates and I look forward to celebrating the 50-game milestone with them this weekend.”
Sunshine Coast Lightning will battle it out against Adelaide Thunderbirds at Priceline Stadium on Sunday, 22 July. The Round 12 match will be broadcast live on the Nine Network in Adelaide from 12.30pm ACST, as well as on Telstra TV and the Netball Live app.
