Taurua Eager For Top Of The Table Clash

An energetic showing on court this week indicates Sunshine Coast Lightning are champing at the bit for Saturday’s clash against ladder leaders NSW Swifts.

Head Coach Noeline Taurua believes any residual effects from World Cup have cleared and the team is poised for the high intensity game in two days’ time.

“I’m looking forward to playing against the number one in Swifts, they’ve been very consistent – not only this year – but the past two years,” Taurua said.

“Playing them at home to reanoint ourselves back on our floor is going to be awesome.

“Secondly, it’s going to be the clash of the top of the table and this game is definitely going to relay where we’re going to be sitting [headed towards finals].”

The team have benefited from more time as a group this week, after the quick turn around coming out of the World Cup and into the Queensland derby against Firebirds last week.

While Lightning emerged with the win and two bonus points, increased court time with the full team this week has allowed the team to further settle their strategies and combinations.

“[Tuesday’s] training we just got our combinations back and re-looked at our strategies, so we have that collective understanding,” she said.

“The next training session we will be able to raise the bar in regards to intensity – there shouldn’t be any residue coming out of the World Cup, so we want to set our tone for the second half of the season.

“What better way than to do that against Swifts.”

Lightning are the only team to register a win against Swifts this season, with a two-point victory in round four despite the NSW side boasting the home court advantage.
