Sunshine Shootout heads to Brisbane
Sunshine Coast Lightning have confirmed the Brisbane Entertainment Centre (BEC) as the host of the first Queensland derby against the Firebirds in 2019.
The Queensland rivals will clash in Round 3, and with USC Stadium the Lightning’s home court, currently undergoing redevelopment works, Lightning will host the Sunshine Shootout on middle ground at Boondall.
Lightning Coach Noeline Taurua said BEC is home to some very fond memories for the Club including the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) Grand Final and a Semi-Final victory against the Firebirds late last year.
“Our fans came out in force for the 2018 Semi-Final with a sea of yellow flooding the Entertainment Centre. We are so proud of our Sunshine Coast community and how passionate our fans are. We encourage everyone to come down again to support Lightning in the Queensland match.”
Last weekend’s Suncorp #TeamGirls Cup played at the new Queensland State Netball Centre provided a sneak peek into the eight SSN teams following a range of changes across the league.
“We were able to try some new combinations, and overall I’m pleased with how the team is coming together. We’ve had some fresh talent join us and it’s exciting to see it taking shape. After two strong seasons we go into 2019 with some uncertainty, giving us a competitive edge. Our four new recruits offer us a point of difference and come with some fantastic experience at a local and international level.
The trial of the rolling subs over the weekend saw a fluid Lightning squad with a number of changes throughout the four games. “We have a lot of versatility in the team and this was evident with a number of players taking the court in a variety of positions.”
Steph Wood resident Goal Attack for both the Australian Diamonds and Lightning played on the wing over the weekend. Wood said I think its fantastic to be able to play multiple positions. I could also play shooter this year, so to be able to play any of three of those positions is exciting.
“Watching players like Cara Koenen over this pre-season, you can see how much she’s developed. From where she was last year compared to now, she’s a different player, its impressive. I’m thrilled to see both Cara and Laura Scherian join the Diamonds camp next week, especially as fellow Queenslanders.”
The round three SSN clash between Sunshine Coast Lightning and Queensland Firebirds will take place on Sunday, 12 May at 1pm.
