Scherian Named In Diamonds Squad For Constellation Cup
Sunshine Coast Lightning is pleased to announce that centre court player Laura Scherian has been named in the Samsung Diamonds squad set to compete in the Constellation Cup in October.
Scherian’s selection is reward for effort after a standout 2019 season for Lightning, where she dominated in her new role of Wing Attack, after predominantly playing with the centre bib in her first two seasons at the Club.
“This is such amazing news and a fantastic reward for Shez after years of hard work, perseverance and dedication to improving her game,” Lightning Coach Kylee Byrne said.
“She is the epitome of a complete athlete, as everything she does off the court is to prepare herself for training and matches and she leaves no stone unturned in her preparation.
“Plus she is such a great team person and we couldn’t be happier for her selection, we know she will wear the green and gold with pride and do everything possible to earn success at this level.”
Lightning teammate Steph Wood will also continue to represent the Samsung Diamonds in the 2020 international campaign, however the shooter chose to opt out of Constellation Cup selection to rest and regenerate.
Wood was integral in the Diamonds’ Silver Medal World Cup campaign, as well as Lightning’s season all the way through to the 2019 Grand Final.
Diamonds Coach Lisa Alexander said she is excited about the team composition – with Tegan Philip and Ash Brazill returning to the side, and Maddy Turner joining Scherian as new faces.
“My fellow selectors Annie Sargeant, Michelle Wilkins and I believe this is the combination of players that we need to face an incredibly strong Silver Ferns team, with flexibility right across the court and a great mix of experienced talent and exciting up-and-comers,” Alexander said.
“It’s a testament to Netball Australia’s pathway that we have such depth within our elite program that it makes selection quite a task.
“I would like to commend Ash Brazill, Tegan Philip, Laura Scherian and Maddy Turner on their selection following their outstanding Suncorp Super Netball seasons – they’ve shown they have what it takes to perform against the world’s best, standing up in key moments, and we’re thrilled to welcome them into the team.
“The rivalry and respect between the Diamonds and Silver Ferns is immense and it’s always such a great battle – we’re so looking forward to playing four, no doubt, thrilling matches.”
