Scherian Channelling Uncertainty Into Excitement
An announcement on the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball fixture is imminent but Sunshine Coast Lightning’s Laura Scherian is just eager to play netball, regardless of opponent.
Scherian said she is using the uncertainty surrounding the season to fuel her excitement and keep motivation building in the lead in to Round 1.
“It’s a bit strange not knowing who we are playing and when we are playing, but it is all very exciting knowing that there will be a season – we just don’t know how it looks,” Scherian said.
“I think we are ready for whatever comes our way, no matter what it looks like – just being able to put our game out there is what is most important at the moment.”
With the August 1 start date looming, the midcourter admits that she felt a tinge of jealousy when driving past junior community netballers over the weekend at the iconic Fisherman’s Road netball courts.
“I was driving past Fisherman’s Road on the weekend and all the juniors were out there playing – I was a little bit jealous if I’m honest!” she said.
“It was so awesome they are out there playing community netball again.
“We want to give them something to strive for as well and put our brand out there – I just want to get out there playing.”
Scherian praised her teammates for their hard work during isolation, impressed by how they have each returned to training.
“We have a great group of girls to be around and the fact that the whole Club is back together is really positive,” she said.
“We’ve had such a long pre-season so we’ve had the opportunity to work on a few things as individuals – everyone is looking really sharp and ready for the season.
Known for her meticulous training habits, the 32-year-old used the time away from the Club to further enhance her footwork and running patterns – which will no doubt excite Lightning’s loyal following.
“I was particularly looking at my speed and change of direction, so just sharpening up my footwork and a bit of ball skills in there too,” she said.
