Physicality Key To Withstanding Giants

Laura Scherian anticipates a physical battle against Giants Netball on Wednesday at USC Stadium, when the two teams meet for the first time in 2020.

Sunshine Coast Lightning will play their fourth game in 11 days due to the condensed season, so withstanding the NSW team’s contested style of play across the four quarters will be pivotal.

The midcourter also highlighted the strength and diversity of Giants’ shooting unit who will come up against an in-form Lightning defence.

“They are tough team to play against and really physical – so we are ready for that,” Scherian said.

“I think they’ve got a roster of shooters that can have a big impact, especially in that last five minutes, so we have to stop those power shots as well.”

Lightning are coming off a 7 point win over NSW Swifts in Sunday’s Grand Final rematch and Scherian said replicating that stronger start on Wednesday would bode well.

“I think we just clicked more especially in the attack end as a group on the weekend,” she said.

“Following up with a game on Wednesday we really want to come out strong again at the start of the game – like we were able to do on Sunday.

“We can definitely control our starts, it’s about doing our own job when we get out there, ticking away at it and letting the game open up for us.”

Scherian said Lightning have benefited from comprehensive debriefs immediately post match given mid-week games and

“With the games being so close together, we want to shut them off, to close them off,” she said.

“We have been identifying what we can take out of each match but also moving on to the next game quickly.”
