Patient Lightning Members To Benefit From Delayed Season

We may have to wait a little longer to see Suncorp Super Netball live but Sunshine Coast Lightning CEO Danielle Smith believes it’s worth being patient if it increases the chances of crowds in 2020.

The Super Netball League announced Saturday 1 August as the amended start date for 2020, committing to playing out a full 60 game season with finals expected to run into November.

Smith said the timeframe is promising when taking into account the ongoing easing of restrictions, with Lightning hopeful crowds will return in some capacity before year’s end.

“The league is really committed to a full season which is fantastic and that’s what we wanted to see,” Smith said.

“With us starting a bit later, we’re hopeful that a lot more restrictions will ease, so it will make things a little easier like travel, border restrictions and of course the big one; getting crowds back.

“We’re planning a range of scenarios around differing crowd levels, based around what the restrictions might be.

“I think that’s the great thing about the season starting a bit later too, it’s the best possible chance to play to crowds.”

Lightning’s home crowds have a reputation of being one of the most vocal in the league, and the team looks forward to experiencing the energy and momentum that provides at some level.

Smith said through these trying times Lightning Members have remained committed to the Club, with many pledging their membership fees for the 2020 season.

The CEO is hopeful that the weekend’s announcement will prompt more fans to support the Club by joining the Lightning family now a full season has been confirmed.

“We’re really keen for our Members to stick by us, we’re already seeing so many that are [pledging Lightning] and hope more will follow suit if they have the means to do so,” she said.

“It would be great to see more Members get on board now we know the season is definitely going ahead.”
