Lightning To Lift Bar In Training With New USC Facilities
An additional 1,000 voices were willing Sunshine Coast Lightning on from the stands on game day in 2019, made possible by the USC Stadium redevelopment and facility upgrades.
Heading into 2020, upgrades to USC facilities will see benefits of a different kind, with Lightning athletes on hand to help officially unveil the USC Aquatic Exercise Facility today.
Just weeks into Lightning’s training regime and Wing Defence Madeline McAuliffe can already see how the purpose-built High Performance gym and aquatic centre will assist Lightning athletes.
“This facility is incredible, we love the other gym but we always knew this was on the horizon,” McAuliffe said.
“The equipment here is built to our scale, so our taller athletes have the facilities now with the bikes and equipment that suits their stature.
“We’re loving every second of it and to have everything here at USC still is amazing.”
The new facilities are for the exclusive use of USC’s High Performance athletes, including Lightning, USC Spartans and cycling, with increased floor space and tailored equipment.
Lightning have put a focus on strength and conditioning in the gym over the past month with Byrne giving each individual athlete a clear focus area to concentrate on.
McAuliffe said she was enjoying a less rigid training regime in the tail end of the year, before the full pre-season program begins in January.
“We’ve been hitting the gym getting a bit of baseline work in to start off, bit of conditioning, bit of weights,” she said.
“After Christmas we’ll hit it fully, but it’s nice at the moment – we’ve had a bit of flexibility.
“We’ve been able to try some other conditioning things, go for some ocean swims, get out on the Sunny Coast and then get a little bit more in the gym, as well.”
The defender said an extended break travelling abroad has left her feeling reinvigorated and ready for whatever Season 2020 holds.
“Coming back has been really nice after holidays, to be honest,” she said.
“It was good to have that break and refresh, and it gives you that energy to go again.
“On the plane home I was definitely itching to get back in the gym and get the body moving again.”
