Lightning Team Travel South

The full 2021 Sunshine Coast Lightning lineup will converge for the first time this week as pre-season preparations escalate.

South African defenders Karla Pretorius and Phumza Maweni exited quarantine on Wednesday and will join their teammates on a 3-day trip to Sydney, allowing for the team to continue building connections both on and off court.

The trip will include competitive pre-season hitouts against Giants Netball, Melbourne Vixens and NSW Swifts.

Head Coach Kylee Byrne is excited to reunite the team and take that next progression towards in-season match day intensity.

“We look forward to meeting quality opposition at this stage of the pre-season to really benchmark where we are at and what our focus needs to be leading into Round 1,” Byrne said.

“Three back-to-back games provides plenty of opportunity to really test our combinations and apply what we’ve been working on at training in a competitive environment.

“Also, the opportunity to come together without distraction and spend time as a team will be invaluable and it will be great to have Karla and Phumi back with us.

The three games will replicate Suncorp Super Netball rules, including re-introducing Super Shots, rolling substitutions and timeouts, helping best prepare teams for the season to come.

Lightning will play Giants on Thursday evening, Vixens on Friday at midday AEST and finally Swifts on Saturday morning before returning to the Sunshine Coast.

The Giants Netball clash will be livestreamed across the Giants Facebook and Youtube Channel from 5pm AEST Thursday.
