Lightning strikes in final seconds

Sunshine Coast Lightning has taken out the Sunshine Shootout, having reigned victorious against Queensland Firebirds in a nail-biting match at USC Stadium on Sunday, 1 July.

The game saw Lightning player Caitlin Bassett score in the final seconds to secure the win.

Bassett said with minimal time remaining on the clock and state pride on the line, the pressure was on to score the game-changing goal.

“When it comes down to the crunch, I know I’ve done it a million times and I’m more than happy to shoot that goal and take that pressure,” she said.

“After the final centre pass, obviously we didn’t want to score too quickly and allow Firebirds the chance to get that goal back.

“To get the win is fantastic; it’s definitely something we had to work hard for.”

Bassett commended the efforts of fellow team member Kelsey Browne in moving the ball into the goal circle.

“We’ve got that really good connection. I know when I lock eyes with her that it’s going to come in and just to prepare myself,” she said.

“I think her and Steph (Wood) were absolutely fantastic for us this game. They really took the pressure off me.

“Steph and I were chatting about the number of goals that we put up between us. At times I was the feeding shooter.

“I think I got more goal assists than any game before so I think we shouldered the workload together.”

Goal Attack Steph Wood said she was happy with the weekend’s performance against Lightning’s Queensland neighbours.

“Firebirds give it to you for 60 minutes; they didn’t give an inch and they threw everything at us,” she said.

“In attack we found our connections well in the sense that we weren’t as on top of each other as we have been in previous weeks. I think that set us up for the win.

“We’ve definitely improved on the mistakes we’ve made in previous rounds so it was very important for us to get that win.”

Lightning won the match by one goal, with the final score sitting at 58-57.

The team will take on ladder leader West Coast Fever at HBF Stadium in Perth on Saturday, 7 July. The match will be broadcast live on Telstra TV and the Netball Live app.
