Lightning Defensive Duo Shines As Maweni Finds Form
Phumza Maweni earned praise from Sunshine Coast Lightning Head Coach Kylee Byrne on Sunday for her stellar form so far this season.
The Coach claims the Goal Keeper has been Lightning’s most consistent performer across the first six rounds.
Maweni’s defensive combination with Karla Pretorius held Adelaide Thunderbirds to just 45 goals in Sunday’s clash, the lowest total score of any team this season.
“Keeping that Thunderbirds team to 45 was just amazing,” Byrne said.
“I’ve been singing Karla’s praises, but even Phumza, I think she’s been our most consistent player this year.
“Every time she is stepping out she’s putting in a performance worthy of ‘top three’ on the court.
“She’s going under the radar a bit, so I don’t want too many people to work her out.
“That combination her and Karla have is something special and I think it showed on Sunday.”
The Thunderbirds are the only team to have defeated ladder leaders Melbourne Vixens this season, while also claiming the scalps of Giants and Collingwood Magpies.
“We did our homework but the best thing is when the players go out and can execute the game plan,” she said.
“The fact that we had the Thunderbirds – if we weren’t prepared they would have come and got us.”
Maweni finished the game with 4 gains, 3 intercepts and 5 deflections against Thunderbirds.
The long-standing South African pairing of Maweni and Pretorius has only improved this season, benefiting from a full season playing for Lightning in 2019 in additional to their international duties.
