Larger than life character to lead the way at USC Stadium

Sunshine Coast Lightning, in partnership with HOT 91.1, today unveiled the Club’s official mascot “Lucy Lightning” ahead of the first Suncorp Super Netball match at Sippy Downs.

Traditionally fun-loving bastions of entertainment for the young and young at heart, mascots can excite and engage sporting crowds like no one else.

Inspired by the region’s active and healthy lifestyle, Lucy is a fit and energetic netball fanatic. Her confident and outgoing demeanour will endear her to all of Lightning’s loyal supporters.

The Club called on the Coast community to help design and name the inaugural mascot, and the region’s creative and artistic talent answered the call.

Lightning Community and Fan Engagement Manager, Georgia Galton said fan feedback was instrumental in creating the look and feel of the integral team member.

“The drawings, sketches, artwork and ideas were exceptional. It’s encouraging to see so many passionate fans showing interest in the Club,” Galton said.

“Lucy will have a lot of fun at our home matches and will hopefully lift the spirits of Lightning athletes and those cheering them on.

“Her custom-made boots, dress, gloves and glasses are state of the art and perfect to perform her duties at an elite level like the Lightning players.”

After a busy morning on the HOT 91.1 Breakfast radio show, Lucy will spend the afternoon at Mountain Creek Primary School mingling with students, ahead of her debut appearance at USC Stadium on Sunday.

HOT 91.1 Breakfast presenter, Ash Gierke said the program’s listeners had a great time helping bring Lucy to life.

“There was so many great suggestions from the Sunshine Coast Community for the Lightning Mascot and they’re onto a real winner with Lucy,” Gierke said.

“There’s no doubt she will be a crowd favourite and she will be ready to LIGHT IT UP with the players come Sunday!”

HOT 91.1 and Sunshine Coast Lightning received a raft of suggestions for the foundation  Club’s first-ever mascot. The final design was a combination of the community’s great ideas.
