Langman And Pretorius Remain As Lightning Leadership Duo
Sunshine Coast Lightning’s leadership pairing of Laura Langman and Karla Pretorius will remain in Season 2020, with the two players retaining their role of Captain and Vice-Captain respectively.
The Club officially made the announcement today after a comprehensive internal nomination process, in consultation with both players and key Lightning staff.
Head Coach Kylee Byrne said Lightning is lucky to have two such high calibre individuals to lead the team each week.
“It goes without saying what Laura and Karla bring to this Club and their appointment to our leadership group for a second consecutive season is well-deserved,” Byrne said.
“They are two of the world’s best netball players but more than that, they are both incredible people who not only lead by example but also inspire those around them to be better.
“Both players insisted on completing a thorough Captaincy review process after last season and I think that speaks to their character and their selfless dedication to the Club.
“Their strong leadership in recent months while navigating COVID-19 restrictions was above and beyond and I cannot wait to see what both players deliver on court this season.”
Langman, who is known for her meticulous training standards and work rate, impressed as Captain last season after returning to netball from a one-year hiatus – leading Lightning to their first Minor Premiership and third consecutive Grand Final.
The midcourter said the endorsement from her teammates made the Captaincy appointment even more meaningful.
“It’s always an honour to be named in the leadership pairing – especially when it’s voted on by our peers, as well as Lightning coaches and the CEO,” Langman said.
“What’s so wonderful is you can look at any player in our team and they all step up and lead at various times, be it training, in meetings and in games.
“Being the same squad of 10, we’re so lucky to have a second stanza together and it’s heartening that we have a playing group that really care about the product we put out on court but also what we do across the wider organisation.”
Pretorius was in scintillating form in 2019, rewarded with her second consecutive Lightning Player of the Year Award, as well as being named in the Suncorp Super Netball Team of the Year.
The 30-year-old was promoted to Vice Captain at the commencement of the 2019 season, after playing a pivotal role in Lightning’s back-to-back Premierships in the Club’s first two years.
“It’s such a special environment at Lightning and I’m humbled to be named Vice Captain of this Club,” Pretorius said.
“Everyone is a leader in their own way and I see my role as supporting my teammates, caring for them, looking after them, alongside Laura.
“One thing that stands out most to me at Lightning is we constantly strive to be better and that is no different this season and we can’t wait to be back on court playing games of netball.”
The Suncorp Super Netball league is poised to resume on Saturday 1 August 2020.
