Four points a piece for Lightning and GIANTS
A penalty goal scored after the final siren has seen Sunshine Coast Lightning and GIANTS Netball record the first draw of the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball season.
Lightning Head Coach Noeline Taurua said while Lightning had been hungry for a win, the team was happy to be walking away with four points.
“There are so many positives that came out of that game. It’s a stepping stone from last week,” Taurua said.
“Once again there’s a lot of work to be done, especially in that first quarter. The big thing is the team fought and they gave it their all and I couldn’t be prouder.
“It was very physical out there and I think it came down to the wits and the smarts of both teams.”
Lightning player Caitlin Bassett said the physicality was the nature of the game at present.
“I can’t count the amount of times that Kelsey (Browne) hit the deck,” Bassett said.
“She was amazing today and wore the body really well.”
Bassett also commended performances delivered by Lightning players Madeline McAuliffe and Jacqui Russell.
“Jacqui’s work in the unit across our defensive end is really tight. She’s setting it up for the girls at the back so I think she did a really good job,” she said.
“Giants are massive contenders and they had some fantastic patches out there today.
“It’s really important we come out and we win against Firebirds next week.”
Lightning will play Queensland Firebirds next Sunday, 1 July at 1pm at USC Stadium. The sold-out match will be broadcast live on the Nine Network and the Netball Live App.
