Byrne: Wilson A Coach Ahead Of Her Time
Vicki Wilson’s netball brain is almost unparalleled according to Sunshine Coast Lightning Head Coach Kylee Byrne, making the former Diamonds captain’s addition to the Club one to watch this season.
Lightning recently announced that Wilson would join the wider coaching team ahead of Season 2021.
Byrne has experienced Wilson as a coach, teammate, and colleague over the past two decades and believes the fresh perspective and tactical nous she provides will benefit Lightning going forward.
“Years ago Vicki was the one coach that I always thought was ahead of her time and I’m starting to see that all play out now,” Byrne said.
“Vicki’s coaching mind is something I’ve only seen in two or three other people in our sport.
“I think this is the start of something for the Club that will give us another point of difference and take us towards the future.
“[At Lightning] we’re a smart team, we can adapt, we can think, and Vicki adds another layer to that.”
While Wilson is considered one of Australia’s most influential goal shooters in history, Byrne believes she has plenty to offer the full playing roster and the wide-ranging coaching role will reflect that.
The athlete-centric culture drew Wilson to Lightning, in addition to her long-standing relationship with Byrne and believes the pair share a similar philosophy when it comes to coaching.
“The moment I hopped out the car and walked into Lightning headquarters I said to Kylee ‘[Phew]’, it was a deep breath,” Wilson said.
“I think the great thing about Kylee and I is we come from the same mould. We want to make a meaningful contribution to the players and the Club.
“Our conversations are stimulating and robust and we are forever curious in how we can keep moving the game forward, making the players better and doing something creative that will allow us to take that next step.”
Wilson refused to pinpoint one individual player that she was eager to collaborate with, instead saying she was eager to work with each athlete to help them improve and grow.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with an amazing Club with a wonderful history but also to reconnect with [Kylee] and sit alongside her in that coaching forum.
“To work with the athletes of the calibre we have on the playing list is so exciting, they all have amazing talents and skill.
“I can’t wait to get started out on the court.”
