Byrne Praises Wood’s Contribution Against Giants

Steph Wood’s clutch goal in the dying seconds of Sunshine Coast Lightning’s win against Giants Netball provides a ‘moment’ the shooter can cherish, according to Head Coach Kylee Byrne.

The coach praised Wood’s efforts on Sunday, both in regards to creating scoreboard pressure but also her work further up court to set up her teammates.

“It’s her work off the ball that sets up so much,” Byrne said.

“You try to stop her in all different ways but she’s so creative, she comes up with something else.

“I’m loving the starts to her game, I think she’s setting up leads for us but to be able to finish like that for us is pretty special and she gets to take that little moment way from the game too.”

The defensive combination of Phumza Maweni and Karla Pretorius also garnered praise from Byrne, however she noted there was still additional room for improvement – especially with an opponent like West Coast Fever this week.

“I love how they keep wanting to be better, at every time out, at every break they constantly talk about how they can get ball and how they can stop things,” she said.

“Their mind keeps going and going. If we can get them into situations to get gains, it’s great, we’re doing our jobs.

“I think we could still be better at rebounds, even a few pickups in that circle and that could have added five or six goals for us.”

Sunshine Coast Lightning take on West Coast Fever on Tuesday 8 September 2020 at 7:30pm at USC Stadium.
