2017 Diamonds International Calendar Released

Announced today, international netball will return to Brisbane for the first time since 2009, as part of the Australian Diamonds’ 2017 calendar.

Brisbane will open the Netball Quad Series at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, with a double header featuring the Diamonds versus the England Roses and New Zealand Silver Ferns versus the South Africa SPAR Proteas on Saturday 26 August.

Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander is thrilled to bring the Quad Series to Brisbane, in front of a passionate crowd. “We cannot wait to bring international netball back to Brisbane, with two high-quality contests between four of the world’s best netballing nations.

“It will be crucial that we set the tone of the next six months at our opening test of the Netball Quad Series, by putting out a performance our fans can be proud of,” Alexander said.

The Quad Series will then move to the nation’s capital, with the Diamonds hosting the Proteas at AIS Arena, Canberra on Wednesday 30 August.

Alexander believes the Diamonds critical success will lay in their abilities to form strong bonds during the team’s first tour together since January. “As reigning title holders, we know there will be a target on our backs in the Quad Series.

“Our athletes will have to click into gear, after up to half a year apart. In order to be successful, the squad must continue to grow, through diligence and strong connections.”

The Diamonds will then travel to Invercargill, New Zealand for the Netball Quad Series decider against the Silver Ferns on Sunday 3 September.

The Australia versus New Zealand rivalry will heat up in the Constellation Cup, with the two Australian-hosted games also confirmed.

After competing in Auckland and Christchurch against the Silver Ferns, the series will move to Titanium Security Arena, Adelaide on Wednesday 11 October.

The Constellation Cup decider will take place on Saturday 14 October at Qudos Bank Arena, the site of many hotly contested trans-Tasman clashes.

“We have had our hands on the Constellation Cup trophy since 2013, and intend to keep it in our possession. This will not be an easy task against the Ferns, we will not be taking it lightly.”

Both the Netball Quad Series and Constellation Cup play a vital role in the Diamonds’ preparations for Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, where the Australian team will defend their 2014 Gold Medal, according to Alexander.

“With just three international tours between now and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, every quarter played of every game will play its part in our preparations. We are clear on our goal to win the Gold Medal, so will ensure we put the hard work in now.”
